  • There are three major basic belief systems that people will base their ethics on.
  1. Absolute- A person believing in absolutes will say every situation has a right and wrong choice that can be made.
  2. Existential- An existentialist refuses to base their beliefs on value systems like an absolutist would. Instead, these individuals seek to maintain a balance between one extreme or the other.
  3. Situational- Every situation is different and there is not always a clear right and wrong answer. Decisions should be decided upon by “What would cause the least harm or the most good

  • The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) have focused their efforts on shaping the ethical mindsets of public relations professionals. “Although such organizations represent only a small percentage of the total number of individuals working in public relations, they set the ethical standards for, and foster professionalism among, public relations practitioners.”

  • National public relations organizations should abide by regulations set up by organizations such as the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS), the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA), and the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA)

  1. Advocacy
  2. Honesty
  3. Expertise
  4. Independence
  5. Loyalty
